Part of the book series: Protoplasmatologia ((2123,volume 5 / 3a-d))

Abstract

Protamines and histones are the most characteristic proteins of the cell nucleus. They are the basic proteins, which are apparently combined with the DNA in the chromatin of the chromosomes. Protamines are never present in somatic nuclei, they occur only in the spermatozoa of some animal species; in contrast, histones are present in all the somatic cells and they occur also in the sperm cells of some species which do not contain a protamine.
