In order to study the implications for nuclear structure of the data on nuclear masses, the separation energies of neutron and proton pairs have been plotted in various ways. S 2n is used to designate the separation energy of a neutron pair and is given here only for even-N nuclei. S 2p designates the separation energy of a proton pair and is given only for even-Z nuclei. Thus the pair separation energies presented always pertain to two nucleons in the same orbit.
