The stereo chemical relationships in the extended class of mono-aryl-polyenes will be illustrated by two very different substances: I-Phenylbutadiene is a lower molecular weight, volatile liquid; hence, the separation of its spatial forms has been carried out mainly by distillation and by treatment with maleic anhydride (cf. 6); in contrast, the separation of the higher molecular weight, non-volatile polyene, I-phenyl-undecapentaenal set has required chromatographic methods.
