Frost, Drought, and Heat Resistance

Frost, Drought, and Heat Resistance

Part of the book series: Protoplasmatologia ((2126,volume 8 / 6))

Abstract

With the exception of Chapter 5, the present work deals solely with plants. This was necessary because the author is a botanist and not familiar with the animal literature. It is also reasonable, since tolerance plays a greater role in the resistance of plants. The greater complexity of animal morphology, which may lead to the death of a whole organism as a result of injury to a single organ, also results in basic differences between the kinds of resistance in the two groups. In recent years, however, much work has been done on the frost resistance of individual animal cells, and this is more strictly comparable to the plant work. These researches prompted the author to include a chapter on frost resistance in animals, In the hope that this work may help to solve the whole problem for both plants and animals.
