Zusammenfassung
Die Rohhaut neigt in nassem Zustand zur Fäulnis. Wird sie getrocknet, so kann sie vorübergehend vor Fäulnis geschützt werden; dabei kleben jedoch die einzelnen Kollagenfasern zusammen und es entsteht eine harte, hornige Masse. Feuchtet man die Haut wieder an, so wird sie zwar wieder geschmeidig, ist nun jedoch von neuem der Fäulnisgefahr ausgesetzt. Vor vielen tausend Jahren ist die Entdeckung gemacht worden, daß die Haut ihre Eigenschaften vollkommen verändert, wenn sie in wässerige Lösungen gewisser vegetabilischer Substanzen gebracht wird, die daher die Bezeichnung „Gerbstoffe“ erhalten haben. Den Vorgang selbst nennt man „Vegetabilische Gerbung“ und die Verbindung von Haut und Gerbstoff „Leder“. Leder ist dadurch charakterisiert, daß es beim Trocknen nicht hart und blechig wird und in feuchtem Zustand nicht fault.
