Zusammenfassung

Wie kaum eine andere Operation spielt die Tracheotomie seit über 4000 Jahren eine bedeutsame Rolle in der Medizin und scheint trotz medizinischer Fortschritte auch zukünftig weiter an Bedeutung zuzunehmen. In diesem Kapitel wird die Geschichte der Tracheotomie über die verschiedenen Epochen dargestellt. Die Geschichte der Tracheotomie wird nach McClelland in verschiedene Perioden eingeteilt: Periode der Legende (2000 v. Chr. bis 1546 n. Chr.), Periode der Angst (1546–1833), Periode der Dramatisierung (1833–1932), Periode des Enthusiasmus (1932–1965), Periode der Rationalisierung (1965 bis zur Gegenwart).
