Abstract

Vigilance and consciousness have been employed as synonyms by many authors, but have been considered as different concepts by others mainly philosophes and psychopathologists. It has become necessary therefore, to define the limits of the two concepts and the relationship between them, since in the last twenty years neurophysiology has greatly advanced our knowledge about vigilance, sleep, attention, sensation and the mechanisms of neuro-integration. Behaviourists (Hebb) have shown how definite nervous functions are responsible for basic psychological processes which are essential for a state of consciousness.
