Abstract
The preoccupation of many workers to demonstrate precise relationships between electrical properties of the brain and particular states of consciousness has resulted in a large number of publications. Their theoretical importance and their practical value are not easy to assess. Attempts to give “scientific” definitions to the usefully loose term of consciousness have created a great deal of confusion. Moreover, the attempts to predict from particular EEG patterns the probable clinical state of the subject at the time have with very few exceptions proved to be guess-work.
