Abstract
The first man-made objects have already impacted the Moon, and in the following decades a large number of both hard- and soft-landing payloads will in all probability be deposited on the Moon as well as on our neighbour planets. In order to avoid contamination of these celestial bodies by terrestrial microorganisms and organic matter, it is imperative that all objects which are to be landed deliberately or accidentally on the Moon or planets have been thoroughly sterilized and cleaned from any organic materia. It is by now generally agreed that such contamination would represent an irreparable scientific disaster that would frustrate the future possibilities of elucidating such questions of paramount scientific importance as the chemical composition of primeval and prebiotic matter and the occurrence of extraterrestrial life.
The problem of sterilization of space probes has already attracted great interest from various national and international bodies, and in 1958 the International Council of Scientific Unions established a Committee on Contamination by Extraterrestrial Exploration, CETEX, to study this problem. CETEX has made a number of recommendations and drafted a code on proper procedures, but it has no regulatory authority. Therefore, an international authoritative body is strongly needed, which can dictate the use of proper methods to insure against biological contamination of target celestial bodies.
The chief purpose of this paper is to give a state of the art review of the problem of such biological contamination based on recently published astronomical and biological research results. Particular stress is laid on the conditions for contamination of the Moon. Even if the adverse physical conditions on the Moon seem to make serious contamination less likely than on the neighbour planets, sterilization of lunar probes is imperative and will also give valuable experience for the future treatment of planetary probes and vehicles.
The need for sterilization of lunar and planetary probes is generally stated to be only a temporary inconvenience that may be dispensed with as soon as the first instrumented probes have taken samples of and analyzed the composition of these virgin environments. In can certainly be anticipated, however, that a close study of a possible lunar and planetary biology will be a time-consuming enterprise, and that, in order not to miss any scientific chances, the practice of sterilizing payloads for surface impact has to be maintained for a considerable length of time. Further problems will arise when manned missions to the Moon and planets will be realized and if experimental animals are used for one reason or another in such space vehicles.
Aбстрактный
