Abstract
The “volcanic” hypothesis of lunar crater formation continues to be based on superficial analogies with terrestrial volcanoes and calderas. On the. contrary the impact or “meteoritij” hypothesis has greatly improved during the last decades. It gives a physical explanation of crater formation — explosions caused by impacts of planetesimals or “meteorites” on the lunar surface — and it is in accordance with modern knowledge on the origin and evolution of the Moon. The great role of igneous processes in formation of lunar maria and lava flooded craters is, of course, admitted but the impacts of planetesimals are regarded as triggers.
The author reckons that the Moon was accumulated in the vicinity of the Earth from the circumterrestrial cloud of solid bodies and particles. Later itmoved away in the course of thetidal evolution of the Earth-Moon system. Accordingly the bombardment of the Moon can be divided into three stages: a) the bombardment during the main accumulation of the Moon which lasted about 3–5 108 years; b) the bombardment during, the reces- sion of the Moon from the Earth which lasted about 1–2 · 109 years and c) the bombardment by asteroids and cometary nuclei, which continues till now.
The calculations of the thermal history of the Moon show that during the second stage the lunar interior melted and therefore the maria and lava flooded craters were formed. During the third stage the “postmare” craters were formed.
Several objections against the impact hypothesis can be removed if we take into account that many small craters are of secondary origin and are formed by the fall of lumps ejected at the explosive formation of large craters. Therefore they are concentrated on crater walls and light rays. This explains also the origin of crater chains.
Aбстрактный
