Abstract
Taking into account new data on the energy and spectrum of solar extreme ultraviolet, its absorption and ion production rate q in the altitude range 100 – 800 km in the atmosphere for different moments of the day are computed. Analysis of the data show that the ion production rate maximum is situated in the F1 region in the daytime and in the 12 region in the morning and in the evening. During the daytime, in the F1 region q changes by two orders of magnitude, but above the 12 region the change of q is negligible. A typical peak is found on the curves q (h) at ~ 120 km altitude. At each height during the day, ne variations should be proportional to (cos Z©)n; index n for the E and F2 regions is equal to 0. 38 and 0. 15 respectively, which contradicts Chapman’s theory but agrees with experiments. Exponent “n” is not constant during the day for the altitudes between the Fl and F2 regions. Owing to the atmosphere density increase in the daytime at the > 200 km altitude, q value should increase at the > 200 - 300 km altitude and decrease at the 150 - 300 km altitude (according to Z©), and hence above the 12 region maximum one should observe a decrease of q and ne gradients, which is confirmed by rocket and satellite observations.
