Abstract
The pressure rise associated with shock wave turbulent boundary layer separation depends strongly on the interaction geometry, Mach Number, and Reynolds Number. Comparison of measurements of the pressure rise to the separation point, however, indicates that the separation pressure rise, within the accuracy of the measurements to date, is identical for all model geometries for which a significant region of separation is formed. The separation pressure rise is apparently independent of the Reynolds Number but depends strongly on the free stream Mach Number. Recent measurements indicate that the trend of separation pressure ratio versus separation Mach Number in nozzles is identical to that observed on compression corners, forward-facing steps, and incident-shock models. If allowance is made for the small amount of additional compression generally occurring in the mixing region between the separation point and the nozzle exit plane, it seems that the separation pressure ratio is the same as for geometries with closed separated regions. Experimental data is available up to a Mach Number of 6 and corroborate this conclusion throughout. Very good agreement with the available experimental values of the separation pressure ratio is obtained if it is assumed that the separation pressure jump is sufficient to arrest the boundary layer stream line whose velocity is 0.56 of the free stream velocity. For free stream Mach Numbers for which this streamline is subsonic it is assumed that stagnation occurs isentropically; for higher Mach Numbers it is assumed that normal shock compression precedes isentropic stagnation.
