Summary
A recent view of the bio- und lithostratigraphic attributions of different lower paleozoic deposits of southern France is resumed in a correlation table. Due to the absence of metamorphism and the abundance of fossils, the Paleozoic of the southern Montagne Noire is well known, and its columnar sections can be regarded as representative for the whole region. Two tectonic units which differ also in their stratigraphical sequences can be distinguished:

1)
the nappes, showing a lack of upper Cambrian, middle and upper Ordovician and Silurian, forming the near totality of the Montagne Noire,
-
2)
the klippes, showing a continuous sedimentation up from the base of the Ordovician (the Cambrian is not known so far) characterising the region of Cabrières (south-eastern Montagne Noire), Mouthoumet, Agly and Aspres.
