Phase Analysis by the Mössbauer Effect

Part of the book series: Mikrochimica Acta ((MIKROCHIMICA,volume 9))

Abstract

Since the discovery of the recoil-free emission and absorption of γ-rays by Mössbauer1, 2 two decades ago, this new scientific tool — the Mössbauer effect — has attained increasing importance in metal physics, but though widely used, has so far been applied by only a few metallurgists. Some comprehensive surveys dealing with the application of the Mössbauer effect in physical metallurgy have appeared in the last years3–7, but it is not the task of the present article to review the literature covering this field. The aim is rather to convince physicists and chemists who are not familiar with nuclear spectroscopic methods that some of their problems can be solved by the employment of a Mössbauer spectrometer.

Presented at the 10th Kolloquium über metallkundliche Analyse, Wien, 3.–5. November 1980. — Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Hanns Malissa on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
