Stability of Steel Frames with Semi-Rigid Joints

Abstract

The load carrying capacity of steel frames is deeply influenced by the inelastic behaviour of their connections.

The introduction of the concept of “semi-rigid joints” leads nowadays to interesting applications, because of their convenience from the point of view of both constructional aspects (simplicity means economy) and behavioural aspects (damping due to slippage effects). The subject of stability of semi-rigid frames is developed in this part, which is subdivided into five chapters.

Chapter 1 gives general definitions of steel frames and their connections. Chapter 2 and 3 are dealing with the behaviour of connections and its analytical interpretation. Chapter 4 is devoted to the evaluation of the influence of the semi-rigidity on the buckling behaviour of elastic and inelastic frames. Finally, Chapter 5 gives a new interpretation of the “industrial frames”, in which the behaviour of semi-rigid joints is considered as a special kind of imperfection.
