Summary
Comparative Aspects of the Geotectonic Stress Field. The geotectonic stresses have caused various geomorphic and tectonic features. Thus, the orientation of the strike of river valleys and of the dip and dip direction of joints in bedrock are the outcome of tectonic stresses which vary from one geographic area to another. Other indications of the geotectonic stresses come from fault plane solutions of earthquakes, and from in-situ stress measurements. The paper attemps a summary and collation of the above-mentioned effects. It is shown that particularly the analysis of joint orientations affords a simple and efficient means of determining the orientation of the principal present-day geotectonic stresses. It is shown that there is a good correspondence between the seismological and the joint-orientation results which support the views of the “new global plate tectonics”. The in-situ stress measurements, on the other hand, seem to be mainly affected by local conditions.
