Summary
The patient was a 42-year old man with manic-depression who had been repeatedly imprisoned because of uncontrollable exhibitionism. The cause of death was an influenzal encephalitis with positive blood titres of influenza type A and A 1 on three occasions. In addition the post-mortem revealed a dystopia of posterior pituitary tissue on one side of the basal lateral wall of the 3rd ventricle. The significance of this finding in relation to the uncontrollable element in the exhibitionistic tendency is discussed. The dystopia in this active neurosecretory region of the hypothalamus is considered to have played a contributory role.
