Abstract
Dust from mining and quarrying operations has plagued man’s respiratory system for thousands of years. Exposure to quartz dust has caused most of the trouble, because it may lead to incurable or even fatal silicosis. The American Public Health Service, Committee on Pneumoconiosis, defines silicosis as “A dust desease due to breathing air containing silica (crystalline SiO2), characterized anatomically by generalized fibrotic changes and the development of miliary nodulation in both lungs, and clinically by shortness of breath, decreased chest expansion during breathing, lessened capacity for work, absence of fever, increased susceptibility to tuberculosis (some or all of which symptoms may be present), and by characteristic X-Ray findings (Forbes, 1950)”.
