The principle of levitation melting was first formulated by Muck1 in 1923 and applied in practice about 30 years later in the fundamental work by Okress et al.2. Generally speaking it is a kind of induction melting in which the dynamic interaction of a high frequency electromagnetic field and the currents flowing in the metal permits to counterbalance the weight of the metal and to maintain it in a central position inside the coil of an appropriate shape.
