It is generally accepted that the quality of cast metals depends essentially on grain size and grain shape. Usually a fine grained cast structure is most beneficial. A small grain size can be achieved by means of suitable grain refinement methods. In case of aluminium and its alloys appropriate grain refining additives are available. In industrial praxis titanium or titanium along with boron are added in form of master alloys, which contain Al3 Ti- and TiB2- particles and are proved to be effective grain refiners.
