Amputation Neuroma

This is a hyperplastic lesion characterized by the proliferation of all of the elements constituting the nerve. After amputation or transection of a nerve trunk, when proximal nervous regeneration cannot be channeled in the distal nerve segment, it constitutes a tangle of cells and fibers. It is a disorderly proliferation of nerve fibers, with their myelinic coating, Schwann cells and fibroblasts, deriving from the proximal segment of the nerve, and which is exhausted within a few months. The lesion is exquisitely painful.
