Abstract

Hyperplasia is an accumulation of cells due to either accelerated proliferation or slowed maturation and degeneration. Hyperplasia is caused by a stimulus, and it ceases when the stimulus is exhausted. Hyperplasia is functional: as such, it has an organoid structure and it tends to differentiate and mature. Examples are exuberant bone callus, myositis ossificans, brown tumors in hyperparathyroidism, and, probably, aneurysmal bone cyst, pigmented villonodular synovitis, synovial chondromatosis.
