The Art of Singing

Abstract

Nearly all of mankind, regardless of the degree of civilization, indulges in and derives pleasure from song. Whereas some seem to have little capacity for singing in a manner pleasant to the listener and others exhibit remarkable talent in this direction, there are many capable of producing merely an acceptable singing voice whose performance can be appreciably improved by training. It is my purpose here to discuss some of the factors involved in converting the singer to the artist. In this chapter I shall present to you findings from research done at the Harvard School of Public Health in collaboration with Drs. Arend Bouhuys and Jere Mead, discuss my own personal experiences as a voice student and a singer, and try to provide some definition of those factors which are involved in artistic performance (10, 11, 16, 21, 22, 30, 31, 32).
