Abstract
The Lutheran blood group system [10] comprises 18 antigen characters to date (see Tab. 18.1), six of which (i.e. Lu a — Lu b, Lu6 — Lu9, and Lu8 — Lu14) were found to be products of antithetical alleles. Genetical studies are not yet able to show whether or not the high-frequency para-Lutheran antigens are controlled by the Lutheran locus; however, absence of these antigens from Lutheran-null cells and localisation on the Lutheran glycoproteins (see below) clearly shows their close association with the Lutheran system.
