Abstract
At the turn of this century the blood group ABO system of human erythrocytes was discovered by Karl Landsteiner. The importance of blood group antigens in clinical transfusion practice and in haemolytic disease of the newborn was soon recognised, and thorough investigations led to the discovery of a vast number of red cell antigenic characters. Thus far more than 600 erythrocyte antigens have been defined (see [2]), some of which are common red cell characteristics in a population, whereas others are extremely rare and may be found only in one family. In many cases significant differences in frequency have been observed among different races.
