Π-Cyclopropenyl Derivatives of the Transition Metals

Abstract

Complexes are known in which 4, 5, 6 and 7 membered carbon rings are symmetrically bonded to a transition metal atom. Two attempts to form similar complexes of three membered rings, using triphenylcyclopropenyl (1) salts, have been unsuccessful (2, 3). It is a fairly true generalisation that stable complexes of Cn conjugated systems with n small exist at the end of a transition series, those with n large at the beginning. Accordingly, we investigated the reaction between nickel carbonyl and triphenyl-cyclopropenyl bromide {I} in a mutual solvent, methanol. Fine red crystals of >Π-triphenylcyclopropenyl nickel carbonyl bromide {II} precipitated. The probable structure of this compound is shown in the Figure.
