Reactions Between Nitriles and Some Organic Compounds of Boron and Aluminium

Diborane is known to react reversibly with nitriles to form adducts RCN. BH3 {1}, which may also rearrange irreversibly by a two-stage hydrogen transfer process (1):
The products generally obtained {3} are N-trisubstituted borazines, (RCH2NBH)3, and related polymers in which borazine rings are linked by groups -N(CH2R)- (2), although in some systems the intermediates {2} are sufficiently resistant to further rearrangement to be isolated. For example, an explosive crystalline solid (Cl3CCH:N· BH2)n has been prepared from diborane and trichloroacetonitrile (3), and various butyl derivatives (RCH:NBHBut)2 have been obtained by the hydroboration of nitriles with the complex Me3N.BH2But (4).
