Abstract
Comparison of the ultra-violet reflectance spectrum of Mo(II)chloride with that of the acid H2[Mo6Cl8. Cl6]. 8 H2O (1) which has an Mo6Cl8 cage confirms the close structural similarity of the chloride. It seems clear that in the “dichloride” each molybdenum of the cage is coordinated externally with a chlorine, the six-fold coordination being completed through inter-cage bridging. The structural evidence, including the diamagnetism, indicates that all compounds containing the Mo6Cl8unit are electronically saturated.
