Pure Quadrupole Resonance Studies on Hexahalorhenate(IV) and Hexachlorotungstate(IV)

Abstract

We have already studied the pure quadrupole resonance of halogens in potassium hexahaloplatinate(IV) (1), hexachloroiridate(IV), and hexachloroosmate(IV) (2). It was shown that metal-ligand bonds in the latter two complexes, which are paramagnetic, involve π-bond character, because the 5d∈ orbitals of iridium and osmium ions in the cubic field have one and two holes, respectively. This paper presents the results of further studies on paramagnetic potassium hexahalorhenate(IV) and hexachlorotungstate(IV), rhenium and tungsten ions in which have three and two electrons in their degenerate 5d ∈ orbitals leaving three and four vacancies, respectively.
