The Nature of Solutions of Transition Metal Salts of Very Strong Acids in Non-Aqueous Solvents

Abstract

Transition metal salts of strong acids have been p rep ared in solution in diethyl ether, nitromethane, and benzene by the reactions:
$$n\;AgR\; + \;M{X_n}\; \to \;M{R_n} + n\;AgX \downarrow$$
and
$${\text{n}}\;{\text{AgR}}\;{\text{ + }}\;{\text{M}}{{\text{X}}_{\text{n}}}\; \to \;{\text{M}}{{\text{R}}_{\text{n}}}{\text{ + }}\;{\text{n}}\;{\text{AgX}} \downarrow$$
R is the anion of the very strong acid: [ClO4 ]-, [CF3COO] -, [BF4] -, and [SbF >6] -, X is Cl or Br, and M is the transition metal. Solutions have been prepared in the above solvents as follows.
