Abstract
Minute particles in chickenpox vesicle fluid were first seen by Aragão (1911) using light microscopy. Paschen (1917, 1919) recognized that these were probably virus particles and later similar particles were demonstrated in zoster vesicle fluid (Paschen, 1933; Taniguchi et al., 1934). Amies (1933, 1934) described staining methods which showed that virus particles in zoster and chickenpox vesicle fluids were morphologically alike. Van Rooyen and Illingworth (1944) found it possible to distinguish chickenpox from smallpox by examining stained smears from vesicles. They described varicella elementary bodies as 0.125–0.175 in diameter, these being smaller and much less numerous in the smears than were virus particles from smallpox vesicles.
