Abstract
Laboratory help is not required for the diagnosis of typical clinical cases of chickenpox or zoster. Various laboratory procedures are available, however, for assessing atypical cases, or in the differential diagnosis of smallpox which may on occasion prove difficult (Thompson, 1967). The earlier use of rabbits (Salmon, 1905) and monkeys (Park, 1902) which responded to inoculation of smallpox material but not of chickenpox, has been superseded by other methods.
