Abstract

Computers, despite their complexity, are composed of surprisingly few types of basic circuits. Of course, circuit designs and circuit elements vary from machine to machine, but—disregarding auxiliary devices—the computer proper consists essentially of two types of functional elements: storage elements, and logic circuits. Storage elements retain information (numbers, instructions, signals, codes, etc.) for longer or shorter periods of time1. Logic circuits perform logic (or arithmetic) operations. They are sometimes also referred to as decision circuits, switching circuits or logical elements.
