In analyzing the sensitivity of the ear, we noted that sounds in the middle frequency range can vary in amplitude by a factor of a million to one and still be within the receptive capability of the ear. The response of the system to this large variation in amplitude or intensity is to register a difference in loudness. Thus loudness is the subjective parallel response to physical changes in intensity of sound much as pitch response parallels changes in frequency.
