In certain cases of almost total deafness, the hair cells are non-functional but the VIIIth nerve is spared. In such instances the direct electrical stimulation of the nerve endings to restore some sensation of hearing has seemed worth investigating. No one entertains seriously the idea of duplicating the hair-cellnerve interface by ascertaining how many effectively separate connections there are from hair cell to nerve. Not only would it be too difficult technically, but we do not know the number or precise nature of such connections.
