The Surgical Management of Spinal Canal Stenosis

The causes of spinal stenosis may be classified as follows:
  1. 1.
    Congenital Causes
    1. a)

      Achondroplasia and other forms of dwarfism.

    2. b)

      Congenital small spinal canal, with short vertebral pedicles.

    3. c)

      Hemi-vertebrae with lumbar scoliosis.

    4. d)

      Congenital cysts arising from the dura or arachnoid, in an otherwise normal spinal canal.

  2. 2.
    Acquired Causes
    1. a)

      Degenerative spondylosis, including degenerative spondylolisthesis.

    2. b)

      Vertebral fractures, post-traumatic or pathological.

    3. c)

      Spinal infections.

    4. d)

      Paget’s disease.

    5. e)

      Following some spinal operations.
