Radiophysics, Radiobiology and the Gamma Knife

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to relate the general knowledge, outlined in chapters 3, 4 and 5, to the particular conditions pertaining to Gamma Knife radiosurgery. This is a fascinating area, where new methods and findings are expanding and enhancing our knowledge, at an increasing rate. One particularly important new aspect that will be mentioned is research concerned primarily with the effects of single shot radiation on tissue. It has been mentioned (see chapter 1) that the term radiosurgery has unhappily become somewhat controversial. Nonetheless, all concerned with treatment techniques, which may loosely be said to fall under the generic term radiosurgery agree that extremely precisely localized, single treatment session radiation are two of the hallmarks of the techniques.
