Intracerebellar Target Areas

Often large resections of Cerebellum may be carried out without severe postoperative neurological defects. But often in these operations especially medially located structures — upper and middle cerebellar peduncle, Nucleus dentatus, segments of the upper Vermis — may be preserved. Total hemispher-ectomies of Cerebellum are rare, and they always are followed be severe defects. There are three cerebellar functional systems:
  • Neocerebellum, that is, hemisphere, middle and upper cerebellar peduncle. A defect here is followed by locomotoric ataxia. An incomplete defect may be compensated by intact sections

  • Palaeocerebellum, that is, Vermis (except Nodu-lus) and inferior cerebellar peduncle. Its defect is followed by static ataxia. Compensation may be problematic if upper segments of Vermis are destroyed

  • Archicerebellum, that is, flocculonodular area. Its defect on one side is followed by a defect of optokinetic nystagm on one side
