Abstract
The Utility of Automated Systems in the Search for Extraterrestrial Life. The prospect of examination of other planets, especially Mars, for forms of life have given rise to the development of a number of concepts for “life detection”. These all require a considerable degree of automaticity in that a sample must be secured, processed in some way, and one or another property of the sample studied as evidence of a material or process attributable to a living form. The many unknowns concerning the Martian environment, coupled with great communication distance, leads us to consider a further level of automation, such as the programming of individual experiments so that early experiments can influence the conduct of later ones, the scanning of experimental results automatically so as to select the best information for transmission and the like. The prospects for success in developing such a system are discussed.
