Abstract

One of the novel properties of the augmented theory of elastic dielectrics is its accomodation of an electromechanical interaction even for materials with centrosymmetric physical properties. This may be seen by inspection of the energy density WL as given in (4.8). For centrosymmetry, fijk = jijk = 0, since there are no centrosymmetric tensors of odd rank. However, this still leaves dijkl which is the coefficient of an electromechanical coupling term in the augmented theory but does not appear in the classical theory.
