Let B be a continuous material body at an instant t0 of time, occupying in the space a configuration K0 which will be considered as a reference configuration. We assume that in the reference configuration the body is free from stresses and that all points of the body are at the same reference temperature θ0. In the configuration K0 the points X of the body are referred to a system of coordinates XK with the fundamental metric tensor GKL, K, L = 1,2,3. The coordinates XK will be called material coordinates, since the material points X of the body at any of its subsequent configurations may be identified through their coordinates XK at the initial configuration.
