Abstract
Before being seen in the general form of a system, the automaton has moved many steps in its birth field of electrical engineering. It would be naive - besides ungrateful - to forget such an origin, and in particular the tight relation between automata and sequential networks, since many aspects of the first have been studied to support the development_of the second. In fact, Automata Theory has reached its present stage mainly because of the impact of computers on today’s society: as well as, for example, other branches of Mathematics have flourished in connection with the needs of Nuclear Physics.
