Creep Rupture in Polycrystalline Materials

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: International Centre for Mechanical Sciences ((CISM,volume 464))

Abstract

To gain efficiency in technological processes, such as energy transformations (power plants, jet engines) and (petro)chemical reactions, the temperature should be as high as possible. Therefore, advanced, high-temperature materials are used. Their safe operation in such high-temperature environments, however, is severely limited by creep fracture, which can occur suddenly after years of stationary loading. Creep fracture can lead to high costs (down time, repair) and even loss of human life.
