Zero Crossings, Peaks and Material Fatigue

Abstract

To determine the life expectancy of a structure or the probability of its failure, the probability for the stress to exceed a given value,*) as well as of the mean frequency of this exceedance, must be known. In addition, it will be important to know the distribution of subsequent stress peaks. All these questions are, in general, difficult to answer, particularly so for nonlinear structures.
