Self — Supporting Bearings for the Spin — Axis

Owing to the high speed of rotations one can, to support spin axis, use self-supporting gas-bearings the sup port of which is effected by the speed of rotations. In this case the axis is fixed while the housing of the bearing firmly connected with the gyro-rotor rotates. To enhance the effect of supporting spiral grooves are often milled into the axis. Figure 9 and Figure 10 show a herring bone journal bearing and a thrust bearing of this kind. In order not to make the calculations too complicated we shall only discuss the smooth journal bearings. As we also want to treat instabilities we must assume the flow in the gap as not stationary.
