Abstract

In this paper we characterize the user profile of systems for spatial data handling. In particular, we characterize the user requirements of a spatial data handling systems dealing with planning and decision making problems. The basic features of these systems is the possibility to support incremental constraint definition and modeling activities.

Moreover, we show that a user requirement analysis in this field should not be performed simply factorizing the set of the operators related to the reference applications, but through an abstraction direct to characterize this reference applicative operations set in terms of “set-oriented” primitives.

We claim that the spatial join, together with few fundamental geometrical operations such as intersection and composition of sub-components, provides a sound platform to define applicative operations.

In particular we aim to point out which functionalities should be set at the system level, and which ones can be set at the application level. According to the present user profile, we also introduce a target architecture for a decision making system that is based on the view building mechanism; the related conceptual data model is also given. As an example, in the last section we introduce a real proposal.
