Data Structures and Data Models in GIS

Abstract

In Geographic Information (GI) technology, it is essential to find suitable mappings between the — one and only — ‘real world’ and — several possible — ‘virtual worlds’ that constitute greatly simplified copies of the original, omitting aspects that are irrelevant for a certain range of applications [1]. It is also of prime interest to design data structures that are powerful and rich enough to support such applications, yet lean and flexible enough to adapt to today’s restrictions, as they are imposed by the hardware with respect to data volume and performance [2]; other restrictions — widely unrecognized, but far more severe — are clue to the lack of experience as to which goals can be and which shall be achieved by the use of geographic information systems (GIS).
