Matching and Mapping of Stars in Star Catalogues

The materialization of a reference frame is a fundamental task which is relevant to both astronomy and photogrammetry. A step toward this direction is the construction of a stellar catalogue. After a brief introduction on the main astronomical catalogues presently or soon available and the status of photographic sky surveys, the principles of data reduction of photographic plates are outlined; then, three successful methods for the construction of all-sky photographic catalogues using Schmidt telescopes are presented.
