Abstract

The behavior of the tool-clamping interface was investigated in high-performance conditions in drilling and in end-milling operations. The main interest was in characterizing the behavior of typical clamping unit, evaluating the influence of their properties on the process performance parameters. Five clamping systems were characterized experimentally. Two of them were tested in drilling, and two were tested in different milling operations. The relations between the clamping system properties, the cutting conditions and process performance parameter were defined. This may contribute to a better evaluation of the tool-clamping role in high performance cutting, and to an improved clamping design.
