Die Atomtheorie strebt an, alle physikalisch-chemischen Unterschiede der Atome, soweit sie nicht (wie etwa Atomgewicht, Radioaktivität usw.) auf Eigenschaften der Atomkerne beruhen, auf die räumliche Anordnung und die Bewegungszustände der Elektronen in der Atomhülle zurückzuführen.
